You only need use a very small amount and this actually goes a very long way, it is also good for preventing friction and is a non-irritant product.
While water based lubes are also good, any lube with glycerin, oil or any added flavors and sugars is not a great idea. The vagina is able to lubricate itself although often not enough to prevent friction, irritation and even small tears and silicone lube helps. It is also good for anal sex practices and for use with condoms.
Some lubes contain the highly corrosive Nonoxynol-9 this is a strong spermicide, its use is dangerous with condoms as it corrodes the latex they are manufactured with and this in turn makes the risk of contracting HIV higher.
